Engineering Day Challenge
Are your students interested in 3-D printing? If so, this challenge is for your classroom! In this challenge, students have the opportunity to design a shoe and ‘Get their Foot in the Door’ to learn more about the Engineering field! Submissions are due by 10:00 AM CST Monday, February, 21st.
Directions:
- As a class or club, brainstorm a shoe design!
- Design a shoe using whatever software is available to you – take into account FDM technology (Fused Deposition Modeling.) MAX dimensions of 1.5x3x1.5 (width X depth X height) inches.
- Submit your file(s) (STEP, STL, Solidworks, etc.) for your shoe design by February 15th and answer questions about your project through the Challenge Submission Form.
- Join the webinar on February 25th where winners will be announced. Prizes will be awarded accordingly after.
Thank you for your participation in this challenge! Email any questions to event@sukup.com
FAQs
Who can participate?
Any registered high school students (8-12th grade) or college student(s) are eligible to participate in the Zoom webinar and the ‘Get Your Foot in the Door’ 3-D Engineering Day Challenge. Exclusions include Sukup Manufacturing Co. employees and their immediate family members (spouse, parent, child, sibling, grandparent, grandchild, and/or “step” of each).
We strongly encourage ONE submission per classroom or club for the ‘Get your Foot in the Door’ 3-D design challenge, but multiple submissions will be accepted for larger groups.
Should students design one pair of shoes or a single shoe?
Students have the creative freedom to design one pair of shoes OR a single shoe designed for either the left or right foot. Points will not be docked for either selection, but the overall effort and attention to detail will be considered in the Engineering Day Challenge Rubric 2022
What happens after I submit my design?
Sukup Engineers will 3-D print your design and judge them prior to Engineering Day. The winner(s) will be announced during the Webinar. Schools will also receive a printed copy of their shoe design following the webinar.
What is FDM Technology?
FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) technology uses a thermoplastic filament that is heated to melting temperature and extruded, layer by layer, to create a three-dimensional project. The printer we will use utilizes FDM technology. The material we have is PLA (green). This material is not food safe, but it is made from corn. Please Note: All shoe designs will be printed green.
Will any prizes be awarded?
First place winner(s) will receive a certificate and their shoe design will be printed to a larger scale - MAX dimension of 4”x4”x6” (width X depth X height). Additional prizes may be determined at a later date.
